Earth Day, Hurray!!

In honor of Earth Day on Sunday we have been talking about how to take care of the Earth.  I saw this AWESOME anchor chart made by a Cupcake for the Teacher on Pinterest and knew I needed to use this in my classroom.

The students and I brainstormed about how we can show that We LOVE Earth!!  As the students gave answers I did my best to illustrate their answers.  Next the students created their own little posters to take home.

This week we have been learning when to add –es and –ies to words.  I created this anchor chart to help the students.  I pulled a student name stick gave them a word and they decided if it would need an –es or –ies and then wrote it on the correct side and added the ending!
We decided that –es is:
word + es

and –ies is:
word – y + ies

Then we practice this in this Earth Day inspired Word Work Activity:

Ouch!! Teaching the /ou/ Sound - Mouse Visit! HA!

This week we have been learning the /ou/ sound like in OUCH!!  What a CrAzY week so far and today is only Tuesday – I can’t believe it.  I decided to go ahead and branch away from HM this week!!  Our comprehension skill is Main Idea and Detail and you can only teach that with butterflies so many times.  – Plus I think the butterfly story will be perfect for sounds for Y!!  Anyway we are learning about people that help us with the /ou/ sound: Health Care Professionals:

We've learned about Doctor’s Tools and pharmacists so far – We will learn about doctors, nurses, and x-rays later in the week.  I created this TPT Unit to use this week.  In the unit there are LOTS of recording sheets but we have a copy limit at my school so I often have the students write on newsprint paper to save copies where I can.  Here is a look at what we are learning.
ABC Order

Vocabulary Words – Use in a Sentence

Syllable Split – Spelling by Syllables

/ou/ and /ow/ Sound

Comprehension: Main Idea:
Pharamists

Doctor’s Tools

The WILDEST thing happened this morning.  A mouse ran right across the room -- One of my student’s SCREAMED, “A RAT!!!”  I ran right out of the room!! After I got the nerve to go back in I opened the back door and I’m hoping that he decided to “head for the light”.  So today when we wrote in our journals of course we had to write about our “visitor”.  I wish I would have taken some pictures they were SO FUNNY!!!!  And one student pointed out it was perfect for the /ou/ week!! J  At least they are learning!! HA!  If you are interested in checking out this TPT pack click HERE!

We’re really cooking! Frontload Friday!

Today I introduced a few of our centers for next week!  I’m so excited for some of our food themed centers.  First we practiced building compound words with pancakes. This activity can be found in my Pancake Fun pack.  (Note to self: I should have left these pancakes as a square or used them on the floor.  They keep rolling in the pocket chart. ) But the students still enjoyed building the compound words!

Next, we also learned about the –ie, -igh sound with my phonics activity Just Right Pie.

FYI - I do know there are two pies but I had trouble coming up with -ie words.  So I went ahead and put it in twice.  This usually helps me see if they are reading the words. :)

Today in math we did an activity from my Fun with Food Math Pack.  For this activity the students choose a food item and have to draw the coins they would need to buy that food item.  They LOVED this activity.  It was fun to see them generate different ways to make the same amount.

The day was cut sure due to a tornado watch and we released an hour early.  I was pretty excited to be able to come home early on a FRIDAY!  Hope you ALL have a GREAT weekend!
