ValenTIME and a Hook on a Brook

This week was a week of LOVE!!  Everything we did had a Valentine theme!!  I wish I would have taken more pictures of everything but here are some pictures of our math centers:

Sweet Time Sorting – Concept of Time
The students read each heart card and decided:
Will it take 2 seconds? 2 minutes? or 2 hours?

Read the Hall Time – Time to the Half-hour
The students looked at the analog clocks and wrote the digital time on their paper.

Love of a LifeTIME- Time to the Half-hour

The students drew hands on the clock to match the digital time on each heart.

Memory Match Time – Time to the Half-Hour

The students maked the digital and analog clocks.

Measuring Candy Hearts – Nonstandard Unit
The students estimated and measured each line with large and small candy hearts.

On Fridays I introduce next week’s Phonics Skill to get a little head start on ALL of the teaching that happens on Mondays.  Here is a look at our Word Work Center:

The students will sort each fish and decide if it has the /oo/ sound like in hook and if it doesn't have the /oo/ sound they will put it back in the water.

We learned that sometimes the oo says /oo/ like in Hook in the Brook.  We talked about how it almost sounds like someone hits you in the belly.

Valetine Freebies

Here are a few Valentine Freebies:
Put the hearts together to build words.
Choose a word from each letter in heart.  Then write a story using word wall words.
Search the poem for Phonic Skills.
I LOVED Abby’s Sweet Story Problems.  I used them last week in my Math Centers.  So I decided to make a Number 2!  For this week!

Queen of Heart Art Activity

Queen of Hearts
What a fun week!!!  Today we made the Queen of Hearts!!!  This is a Hand Print Art Activity.  I found the pages from a book in my classroom years ago and the ART projects are a little hard to manage at times but the students always love the end product.  I took of picture of the student sheet in case you want to try it in your classroom.  Here is the STUDENT SHEET.
This year I had the students trace each other’s hands.  This really helped to conserve paper.  They were able to squeeze both hands on a ½ sheet of paper.

Double Hearts Ending Blends

Ending Blends
This week we are learning about Ending Blends.  I loved First Grade Parade’s Snowman Ending Blends.  Since we were focusing on _ft, _nt, and _lk I made these double hearts for our class.

The student’s took turns matching the word with the picture.  Next the students recorded their words in a Word Sort.  The students loved this idea!  They also illustrated some words on their paper or practiced using them in sentences.  Later in the week the students will participate in a Read the Hall where they will take their clipboard out in the hall, read the words on the wall, and record them under the correct ending blend.
