Earth Day In May? And all about BUGS!!

Last week we tracked back in after a four week break!! Boy was it nice to have a month off for Spring Break!!  We missed Earth Day during our Track Out so I decided to start off with that!! I won Cara’s Wonderful Earth Pack!! It is so cute!! One of our favorites was this cute craft!! My students loved it!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 This week we are hard at work learning about insects.  We started off by learning some Fun Facts about bugs.  My students LOVED IT!!  Then I had them choose two bugs to compare and contrast in Work on Writing.  Check out some of their cute work:

 

 

Next, we did a little contraction review in Word Work.  The students had to sort the contraction cards and then they had to record them on this sheet:

 

Also in Word Work, the students could also choose to count syllables in the bug words!!

In writing I used another FREEBIE from Cara!!  I read Hey, Little Ant to my students and then we completed this little writing craftivity.  The students loved every minute of it!! You can find this activity HERE!

The insect fun even continued in math where the students practiced measuring in our Math Tubs!!

Buggy for Measurement

Congratulations to Rachel, Ashley, and Chrystal I emailed you a copy of my measurement packet!!  Check your email!! 

This week we started measurement in class!!  I read these books to my students!! They are some of my favorites and they help introduce some great vocabulary: gaps, overlapping, and standard unit. 

 

  

Here are some pictures from one of our lessons:

I started off by having all my students sit on the perimeter of the carpet.  (I use that word with them to help build the vocabulary!)  Next ,I put out some links and these measuring cards.


Next we started measuring!! 



After a student measured this caterpillar we talked about what "she" did wrong.  We remember that we need to start at the edge.



We measured again and had to add one more link.  This helped my students understand the importance of starting at the edge. 

 As we measured the students recorded the information on the SMART Board.  I put a copy of the sheet under my document camera.

This lesson and one just like it our featured in my pack.  I love being able to complete one with my students and then they are more successful on their own.

We started the week by learning when to Drop the e and add -ed and -ing.  This activity really helped my students practice spelling these words correctly.

 

 

This year instead of morning work my students come in and read.  They LOVE IT!!!  They love True and False books from Scholastic.  I always hear them quizzing each other in the library which made me create this little center True and False Rainforest Animals!!!  It was a hit!  :) 

 

We did tons more activities but today was track out day for me!!! Which means I'm off until May 10th!! :)  So I wasn't "thinking" or remembering to snap many pictures!!

Shoe Measurement - How big is your shoe?

          A few years ago I was a presenter for North Carolina Partnership for Improving Math and Science (NC PIMS).  I presented these SUPER cute shoe measurement activities.  I decided to try a few of them in my class this week since we are working on Measurement and Capacity.  I recreated 4 stations:

How many shoes tall are you?
Height in Shoes

  

Who has the Biggest Shoe?
Length of Your Shoe

 

What’s the Scoop of Your Shoe?
How many cubes will fit inside your shoe?

 

I think a lot of my students will be wearing boots this week! LOL :)

Weight in order from Greatest to Least

Computer – We played Poodle Weigh In!

 

Each day the students visit one center and they record the results!  By the end of the week they will get to visit each station one time!
