Addition Math Centers

Hey Everyone!!  I’ve been hoping to post for a few weeks but y’all I have been so tired after school!!  Since I work at a year round school today was DAY 21!!  I can’t believe it.

We start math with a Daily Word Problem of the Day!!  I purchased this back during the Back to School sale and it has made my life so easy!!

Next we do our daily lesson.  As soon as each child finishes they head over and start their math center.  This allows me to be free to help any child that needs a little extra support.
We have been doing some easy back to school math centers for the last few weeks.  This week we started using my Back to School Addition Centers!!  My students LOVE math centers.

Here are some pictures from this week:

Apple Adding - Match the apples and add.

Apples Away - Find ways to make 3, 4, and 5

Lunch Box Parts - Find the missing part

Backpack Match-Up

Here is a closer look at this Addition Pack.

If you are interested you can purchase this pack here.

We’re really cooking! Frontload Friday!

Today I introduced a few of our centers for next week!  I’m so excited for some of our food themed centers.  First we practiced building compound words with pancakes. This activity can be found in my Pancake Fun pack.  (Note to self: I should have left these pancakes as a square or used them on the floor.  They keep rolling in the pocket chart. ) But the students still enjoyed building the compound words!

Next, we also learned about the –ie, -igh sound with my phonics activity Just Right Pie.

FYI - I do know there are two pies but I had trouble coming up with -ie words.  So I went ahead and put it in twice.  This usually helps me see if they are reading the words. :)

Today in math we did an activity from my Fun with Food Math Pack.  For this activity the students choose a food item and have to draw the coins they would need to buy that food item.  They LOVED this activity.  It was fun to see them generate different ways to make the same amount.

The day was cut sure due to a tornado watch and we released an hour early.  I was pretty excited to be able to come home early on a FRIDAY!  Hope you ALL have a GREAT weekend!

Wild Weather - Math and Literacy Fun

Hey Everyone!  Hope everyone is enjoying their Thanksgiving Break!  I wanted to share some ideas we did a few weeks ago.  Our phonics skill was l blends – I decided to use clouds to teach this skill.  Our comprehension skill was Drawing Conclusions.  That is such a tough skill for this age group but once I found the BUG eyed Weather Kids from Scrappin Doodles I knew my students would love this skill!  From there the Literacy and Math ideas all linked together!  J

Math – Estimation
How many cotton balls will it take to cover the picture?

I always put the picture on my ELMO and project it onto the SMART Board then I place one (counter, cotton ball) on the picture for the students to use as a reference.  Then the students record their guess. Then we cover, count, and the students record the actual amount it took to cover the picture.  We also talk about how a good guess is within 5.  So we decide if "we" made "good" guesses!

Math – Estimate and Measure
How long is the line in big and mini marshmallows?

Literacy– Drawing Conclusions
We used the same pictures from the cotton ball activity and the students had to draw a conclusion about what type of weather in each picture.

Literacy– Word Wall
We even used the letters in CLOUDS to practice the words on our word wall.

Creative Writing
We used the same pictures.  The students wrote about some of the pictures.

Poetry
We read a poem about Rain and found the rhyming words.

If you are interested in any of these ideas, plus a few more,  You can purchase this unit in my TPT store!

Feed the Puppies -- Before they go MAD!! - PRINTABLE

This week we are learning about BOSSY R!!

We started off by making a popcorn art activity.

Next we did several word sorts including this popcorn words matching activity.

You can download a sample here!

Today we learned -- Bossy R like in: er, ur, and ir

I wrote a book that I read to my students!!

They really enjoyed the book.  Next they did a Read the Hall activity where they went in to the hall in search of ER words.  Since all first graders are working on the same skill -- we save resources and create one copy to post in the HALL!!  The students love this idea, and surprisingly they behave during the search.

You can purchase the BOOK and word search acitivity here!

Yesterday during guided reading with one of my groups one of the students said, "ER, like a MAD Dog!"  ---  I thought!!  WOW you're right.  This inspired me to rush home to create this word sort.  Since the week is almost over I will most likely use it for practice in guided reading this week and next week!!
